User groups act as a source of information about treatment services, advocacy for patients meeting treatment professionals, advice for services about how the experience of treatment can be improved, development of novel and different ways of thinking about how treatment should be delivered and as a source of self-help.

There is a wide variation in types of treatment group, which perform each of these functions in varying degrees.
